Executive Assessment: Beyond the CV

A strong CV shows what someone has done. It says very little about how they will perform in a different context. Here is what a proper assessment adds.

A CV is a record of positions held and results claimed. It is a reasonable starting point for evaluating a senior candidate, and a poor basis for a final decision on its own.

What a CV cannot tell you

A CV cannot show how someone actually leads a team through a difficult period, how they make decisions under incomplete information, how they handle conflict, or whether their previous results depended more on the person or on the specific conditions of the company they were in. Two candidates with similarly impressive CVs can be very different hires in practice.

What structured assessment adds

A proper assessment process combines multiple structured conversations, often built around real scenarios relevant to the role, with reference checks and, where useful, formal evaluation tools. The goal is to build a picture of how someone thinks and operates, not just what they have previously done, and to test whether their strengths actually match what the specific role requires.

Fit with the specific context matters as much as track record

A leader who thrived in a large, established organization does not automatically thrive leading a small, fast-growing market entry, and the reverse is also true. Part of what a thorough assessment tests is whether a candidate's proven strengths actually match the environment they are being hired into, which a track record alone cannot answer.
